BESPOKE FAQ

FAQ

Metal

What is the best metal for an engagement ring?

This is dependant on budget and colour preference, but 18ct and platinum are the most durable.

What is the difference between 9ct and 18ct gold?

9ct yellow gold is made up of 37.5% fine gold and has a soft slightly warm tone to it, 14ct gold has 58.5% fine gold and has a yellow tone to it while 18ct has 75% fine gold in it and is a rich vibrant gold colour.

I wear silver jewellery can you make me a silver engagement/ wedding ring?

I exclusively work with white gold and platinum for engagement and wedding rings as they are harder metals so will last longer and maintain their structural integrity.

Is your white gold rhodium plated?

White gold naturally has some warmth (9ct) or steely darkness (18ct) to it that we think is beautiful but white gold can be rhodium plated on request if you want that pure silver colour. This will need to be replated every few years. platinum is a great option if you do not want the ongoing replating costs.

Can you melt down my pieces to cast something new?

Because of the process I use existing metal cannot be used in your new piece as this could result in a poor quality cast but your metal can be melted down into wire and sheet metal and sometimes traded in as credit towards your new piece. Your piece will need to be weighed and assessed in the studio first.

Cost

How much does a custom piece cost?

9ct gold custom pieces start at $1500 NZD and 18ct gold pieces start at $3000 NZD. Price will always vary depending on stones, metal, design and complexity. A bespoke engagement ring typically sits between $3,500 to $10,000 upwards.

When do I need to pay?

Once we have decided on a design a 50% deposit is due, the remainder will be due upon completion. (If we aren't starting work on your piece for a while I may ask for a $300 deposit to hold your place in my schedule.) The remaining 50% is due upon completion of your ring.

Timing

How long does a custom piece take?

6-10 weeks depending on the complexity of the design and where I am sourcing the stones from. The earlier you can get in touch the better as I can only take on so many projects at a time so there may be a waitlist before I can get to your piece.

Please ket me know if there is a date you need your piece by and I will always do my best to accomodate.

Stones

Do you source the stones?

Yes I have a selection of amazing stone suppliers based in New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom who I work closely with to source the perfect stones.

What stones are best for engagement rings?

Diamonds, Rubies and Sapphires are always my preferred stone to work with as they are hard and durable meaning they are perfect for everyday wear. Sapphires come in a range of colours including but not limited to: blue, green, pink, yellow and orange.

If you do want something specific please get in touch.

As a rule I don't use pearls or opals in engagement rings as they are fragile and not suitable for everyday wear.

Can you use stones from existing pieces?

Yes, reworking heirloom pieces is one of my favourite parts of what I do. Stones will always need to be assessed to make sure they are able to be repurposed without being damaged.

Sizing

How do I find my ring size?

Order a ring sizer here or refer to our ring size guide here.

What if I don't know my partners ring size?

The best way to find this out is by measuring a ring they currently wear (inside diameter) or taking the ring into a jeweller to have it sized. If you know what finger they usually wear that ring on that always helps get the closest fit too.

Get in touch if you need more assistance on this.

Can you resize a ring if it's not quite right?

Yes rings can be resized, and one free resize is included with your ring but it's always best to get as close to the size as possible.
